Angelika Nemeth, is recognized as one of the
world’s premier dancers teaching and
performing Raqs Sharqi (popularly referred to
as “belly dance”). Her repertoire also includes
folkloric and regional dances from the Arab
and Persian world. Currently she teaches
accredited classes in Middle Eastern dance at
three colleges in Southern California where
she has directed and produced numerous
critically acclaimed world dance concerts, and
in 1997 and 2001 co-produced the historic 1st
and 2nd International Conferences on Middle
Eastern Dance. She was also influential in the
creation and development of Orange Coast
College’s World Dance Certificate Program,
which she now supervises. She has received
numerous awards and recognition from her
colleagues for her teaching, choreography
and performing skills. Over the years she has
organized and led dance study tours to Egypt
and Turkey. This summer she will again lead a
tour to Egypt that includes the annual Cairo
dance festival, Ahlan Wa Sahlan, at which she
will be teaching and performing.
As an instructor she gives her students a
solid technical foundation, ensuring that they
develop not only an ear for musical structure
but also an understanding of the dance’s
cultural roots. As an artist she is invited to
teach, judge and perform at festivals,
conventions, workshops, and competitions
worldwide. She is known for her earthy and
fiery presentations, while also displaying
technical expertise and nuanced musicality.
She has danced for royalty and celebrities and
has been featured in settings from intimate
supper clubs to large concert halls.
She is the artistic director and choreographer of the
award-winning Angelika Nemeth Dance Ensemble
(A.N.D.E.), whose repertoire includes classic and
folkloric dances from throughout the Near and Middle
East. The Ensemble has been featured in numerous
concerts and on videos and in 2007 they were invited
to perform in Cairo, Egypt.
Angelika has certificates in Dance and Theatre Arts
and Related Technologies, and holds a B.S. degree in
education and a M.A. in psychology specializing in the
Transformational Arts. Her academic and artistic legacy
has significantly influenced the field of Middle Eastern
dance not only in Southern California but throughout
the world.
