Shopping in Chinatown
For Fans, Footwear, Fashion, Food and More... by Melia
Do you need an inexpensive cover-up, hair piece, fan, practice hip scarf or rhinestone hair ornament, or perhaps some
inexpensive bling or sequined shoes? Try Chinatown.
Shopping in Chinatown is not for the faint of heart, especially on the weekends. As a densely populated area and
noted tourist destination, it can get crowded. If crowds are not your thing and you can’t go during the week, shop
early! Stores open about 10:30 a.m. Here’s a quick game plan (see the map below):
These three stores will give you a good flavor of the Chinatown experience; however, if you’re feeling ambitious,
make a right when you leave Golden Dragon, exit the Plaza and make a right on North Broadway. There are lots of
little shops in the next block and a half with all sorts of goodies, such as Anna Fashion (in Saigon Plaza) where you
can find long hair pieces for about $20.
As always, I suggest browsing through the stores and making your purchases on the way back to your car. If you
find something you like, take a business card and jot down a brief description of the item or take a quick picture
with your phone. That way you can shop and compare styles, prices and quality before you buy, and you’re not
lugging around your purchases while you browse.
* A selection of fried and steamed dumplings and other small sweet and savory dishes including spring rolls, spare ribs, roast duck,
vegetables, soups and sticky rice, served from carts at your table.
For good food and low prices, fans of dim sum* will want
to start at the Empress Pavilion, on the second floor of
the China Bamboo Plaza at 988 North Hill Street. This
place is VERY popular for breakfast and brunch on the
weekends and the wait can be long if you are not there
by about 10:00 a.m. (it opens at 9 a.m. on Saturdays and
8:30 a.m. on Sundays and holidays). The entrance to the
parking lot is on Bernard between Hill and North
Broadway. Remember to get validated!
First stop is Andy Asia Gift (on the same floor as the
Empress Pavilion). Here you will find some fans and
inexpensive bling, including costume jewelry, hair
ornaments, large sequined shawls and sparkly shoes.
On a recent visit they also had practice coin hip scarves.

From Andy Asia Gift, go downstairs and out
the exit onto Hill Street. If you’re interested
in some pricier options, there is a boutique
(on your left before you exit) with beautiful
Chinese clothing, including robes that
would make nice cover-ups. Make a left on
Hill and walk about half a block to the
Central Plaza. You’ll know it by the
landmark ‘Chinatown’ signs.
