THE NAUGHTY SIDE OF LITTLE EGYPT:
CONTRASTING BELLY DANCE AND BURLESQUE THROUGH 100+ YEARS OF HISTORY
(LECTURE & PRESENTATION FOLLOWED BY DISCUSSION)
Friday, July 10th
8:00-10:00pm
$25

Though many belly dancers bristle at the comparison to burlesque artists, the history of the two dance genres are historically entwined for more than a hundred years in America and Europe, on the stages of nightclubs and cabarets, in circuses and traveling carnivals, and on the silver screen!

This lecture will focuses on the differences- and similarities- between traditional Oriental dance and classic burlesque, and how both types of dance changed and influenced each other during the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. Starting off with belly dance and burlesque history, we will move through a timeline from 1868 to the present for each type of dance . We’ll contrast technique and movements, costuming, attitudes in pop culture and the presentation of both genres. The lecture will also explore how these dances still affect each other today, and will be followed by a Q& A period as well as a discussion.
