The Rhythms of the Silk Road - Workshop for Drummers and Dancers

  • Remo RMC 7308 Coldwater Canyon Avenue North Hollywood, CA, 91605 United States (map)

Travel the Silk Road, following the path of the drummers and dancers who journeyed from country to country, while learning, playing, and spreading their music and art.

This workshop is suitable for any and all levels of drummers and dancers. Brand new students, to seasoned professionals are all welcome and encouraged.

Our introductory workshop focuses on four of the famous countries of the Silk Road, the historical network of caravan and trade routes connecting the West to the East, spreading not only silks and spices, but also the art, dance, and culture of each country along it.

As we follow in the footsteps of the traders, soldiers, and travelers, we will learn these four rhythms:

The Daem, the primary pulse from Persia.
The Duyek, literally, “The Dance” from Turkey.
The Malfuf, an ubiquitous beat from Egypt.
The Shiftitelli, the rhythm that brings them all together in Greece.

We will also introduce and explore the various hand percussion instruments of the Silk Road, from frame drums to doumbeks, zills to riqqs.

Students will not only be learning the rhythms, but will also develop the feel of these phrases for improvisation, with a further focus on playing for dancers.

This is the first of a series of five stand alone, but interconnected, workshops. Further workshops in this series focus on specific rhythms, and their myriad variations.

This introductory workshop includes a four page handout.
Drums are available to lend, or of course, you can bring your own.

Each workshop is priced at $20.00 per student.
Students can also pre-register for all five workshops for $85.00.
