1) communicating with the 6/8 rhythms of chaabi and connecting with the heartbeat and grooves organically
2) developing and practicing Moroccan style technique and muscle isolation to achieve the correct aesthetic and
3) learn, rinse, repeat, - absorbing the "body of knowledge" by muscle memory and repetition.
$120 or $250 for FULL WEEKEND INTENSIVE

Sunday, July 22nd
10am-2pm Chaabi Maghribi: Communication with Self and Sisters

Chaabi is 100% improvisation. What makes a great dancer is not only one who has great grooves, but also one who knows how to allow their heart to speak through their body. This day is about "communicating" both to yourself and to other women. Most North African women do not dance alone; they dance amongst other women. This will be the transition from technique to "real world dance circles". This class prepares you for dancing at a women's gathering, wedding, or party in a culturally respectful and fun way.

ABOUT ESRAA WARDA~
Esraa Warda is a North African performance and teaching artist originally from Algeria who grew up in Brooklyn, New York, now residing in Harlem. Having grown up between Brooklyn and Algeria, she was introduced to dance within informal women's spaces and weddings and was quickly acknowledged as a talented dancer within her community and family. Esraa has always been involved in the NYC "underground" North African culture scene since youth but now professionally teaches and performs Moroccan Chaabi and other Algerian dances such as Rai, Chaoui, Kabyle, and Allaoui. Her dance style and teaching methods are non-commercial and focused on the "transmission" of body knowledge mirroring the same way she learned - through women's dance circles. Her dance principles focus on legacy, that we should leave behind dance artistry that is valuable to the transformation and evolution of culture. Esraa hopes to keep North African dance authentic and reflective of how her people dance back home.

Qabila Foundation is dedicated to sharing the diversity and joy of Arabic Folkdance and music. Thank you for your support always as we build cultural bridges through the arts!
