Nasila co-founded this very website in 2006, with
friend and fellow dancer Melia. With just under 10
years of bellydance under her bejeweled belt, Nasila
has become well-known locally and beyond for her
innate sense of musicality, ease of movement,
stunning performances, and passion for the dance.
Nasila began dancing at the age of 5, exploring
ballet, tap, and jazz -- and practicing her moves on
the stage as well as the soccer field. She grew up in
LA, joyfully participating in several years of
competition Show Choir at Burroughs High -- the
very school choir that provided the model for the hit
TV show Glee. She then attended UCLA, where she
earned a Bachelor's in Mathematics with a
Specialization in Computing.
After college, she dabbled in some online start-up
companies, landed a spot as Online Marketing
Director of J2 Global Communications (NYSE: JCOM),
then worked for the Natural Resources Defense
Council before settling down and preparing to raise
a family. It was via a gift from her husband after her
first son was born that she found herself back in a
dance class.

Just moments into her first bellydance class
with Zahra Zuhair in 2002, Nasila became
smitten with Middle Eastern music and
movement. She began with one class per
week, then two, and pretty soon was driving
all over LA taking 5-6 classes weekly. Nasila
began researching the dancers, music, and
culture of the Middle East, and soon
traveled to Egypt solo to further her
studies. She has since continued to train
extensively, taking workshops and classes
with dozens of world-class and/or local
super star instructors of many types of Near
and Middle Eastern dance. In addition to
her countless classroom & workshop hours,
she completed certification courses from
Zahra Zuhair (AIM), Sahra Saeeda (JtE 1& 2)
and Tamra-henna (Middle Eastern history).
Nasila performs with Zahra Zuhair's Ghazella
Dance Company, and a piece of her
choreography was featured in the recent
acclaimed theatrical presentation Journey:
in search of the Divine.

She also performs as a duet as half
of Nasila wa Camila: Sharqiyyah Ruh
(Eastern Soul), and was most
recently invited to showcase her
skills in Kamala's outstanding 2011
production, A Choreographer's
Collective.
Nasila continues to study Middle
Eastern dance and folklore while
honing her classic Egyptian style.
She now coaches and offers
private lessons, in addition to
teaching several classes per week.

Drilling technique is vital to a dancer's confidence. Knowing precisely how to move your body every which way helps you break out of the inner dialogue, and just dance, enjoy the music and create your own interpretation.
Share the joy! Use your time wisely when on stage or in the classroom -- aim to make someone's day. :)

For inspiration, take classes from all sorts of teachers and watch as many dancers as you can -- live, on video, or on YouTube. Listen to music all the time. Feed your muse; never stop learning.
